With back-to-school season upon us, students may have mixed emotions when getting ready to sacrifice time outside for more time back at their desks. Perfect for combating those back-to-school blues, this project will give the kids something creative to do and make their workspace feel a little more inviting, reminding them of trees and being outside.
Made from different paper material from around the house that is repurposed into handy (and eye-catching) organizers, these Nature-themed Pen Holders are easy to make and eco-friendly. Simply go for a walk outside to collect some twigs and pinecones, then use scissors, a glue gun, and a few paper products from around the home to transform them into a creative piece for a desktop!
Here’s What You Need
- 3 toilet paper rolls
- Sticks and twigs in a variety of sizes
- Brown paint
- Extra cardboard (this cardboard can be from anything, including cereal boxes, tissue boxes, etc.)
- Pinecones (optional)
Step 1: Cut two of the toilet paper rolls to make one small and one medium-sized roll (and leave one roll as is, in its original size). Trace the bottom of the toilet paper rolls onto some extra cardboard and cut out three circles, and save these for later.
Step 2: Paint each of the rolls with brown paint on the inside and outside. Let them dry, then glue them together, creating a tiered look when they sit flat on their bases.
Step 3: Glue the twigs and sticks to the sides of the toilet paper rolls. The sticks do not have to be exactly the same size as each other or the rolls; you can decide how regular or irregular you want it to look.
Step 4: Glue the cardboard circles (that were cut out at the end of Step 1) to the bottom of the rolls.
Step 5 (optional): Glue a few pinecones to the corners of the holder to add even more earthy charm to your pen holder.
That's it! We hope you have fun making these unique pen holders and enjoy this touch of the outdoors on your desk throughout the year ahead.
