Winter is coming and with it will come a flurry of holiday activities and of course, snow! To embrace the season, I love making wintry crafts like these hand-crafted 3D paper snowflakes to make the home feel cozy and festive.
I make them every year, and it always felt terrible to throw away so much paper at the end of the holiday season. Using seed paper will eliminate the guilt because you can plant the paper when the holidays are over! The paper will biodegrade and the seeds will grow and bloom.
Here’s What You Need:
- Seed Paper (we used 11 x 17 white)
- Glue stick or glue gun
- String or ribbon
Step 1: Make a square by folding a seed paper sheet into a triangle and cutting off the extra paper. The larger the square, the larger the snowflake pieces will be. Do this 5 more times for a total of 6 squares.
Step 2: Fold the square into a triangle, fold over again into another triangle.
Step 3: Cut 4 slits into the triangle on the fold side. Be careful to leave some space uncut at the other end of the triangle.
TIP: Use a ruler and very lightly draw lines with a pencil to make sure the cuts are evenly spaced and straight.
Step 4: Open up the paper. Take the two smallest triangles in the center of the square and glue them together. Flip over and glue the next two triangles together.
Step 6: Repeat step 5, gluing the triangles together, flipping over to the other side each time until all the triangles have been glued together.
Step 7: Repeat steps 2-6 with the other 5 squares of paper to create 6 snowflake pieces.
Step 8: Glue 3 snowflake pieces together and repeat this with the other three pieces. Then glue the two sets of three together, to create the full snowflake.
Step 9: Punch a small hole in the top of the snowflake, thread a piece of string through and hang.
2D Paper Snowflakes Made With Seed Paper
For a simpler, more kid-friendly variation, try making these snowflakes using the same materials, but no glue or complex folding! You can even mix and match the different snowflakes together when decorating your house for winter!
Step 1: Make a square by folding paper into a triangle and cutting off the extra paper. The size of the square determines how big the snowflake will be. I use squares around 5-10 cm in length.
Step 2: Fold the square into a triangle and folder over again into another triangle.
Step 3: Cut out little pieces from along the folded edges to make shapes in the snowflake.
Step 4: Open up the paper to reveal your beautiful snowflake! Make a small hole in a corner of the snowflake and thread string or ribbon through it and hang.
TIP: Make several snowflakes with different patterns and shapes, because after all, all snowflakes are different from each other!
Once you have a variety of snowflakes, string them together by making holes in one corner of each snowflake and threading through some twine or ribbon. Then you can hang them on wall, staircase, or at the top of an entranceway.
I hope you enjoyed this wintry craft made with seed paper and that you have an amazing holiday season.
