Objectives

To package their soaps with sustainable way that represented their brand
To break the mold and avoid plastic and cardboard typically used for the average bar soap

Strategy and Execution:

“B.A.R.E. soaps was built on the idea that something so simple as a bar of soap can effectively help prevent the spread of diseases and illnesses while improving overall health and hygiene. Our goal is to “bring antiseptic resources to everyone.”

As a brand with a socially conscious vision and products that are “good for you and good for others”, B.A.R.E. Soaps was looking for a sustainable packaging solution for their soap back in 2013. As they began looking, they couldn’t believe how much plastic and cardboard was typically used for the average bar soap. They brainstormed alternative solutions, and plantable seed paper was an idea that came up. They were thrilled to find out there was a market for it!

Plantable seed paper from Botanical PaperWorks was eventually decided on because it is both eco-friendly and easy to test on and evolve. They were able to easily try various iterations before settling on a final package design.

“Botanical Paperworks was great because we were able to have them do the printing for us. Besides, who doesn’t love flowers? We loved that planting the paper was easy and could be a bonding activity for parents and their children.”

Results

By using plantable paper rather than shrink-wrapped plastic or other plastic packaging components that soaps are typically packaged with, they have saved over 28,000 square feet of plastic!

They were recently even mentioned by Nylon in a round-up of 10 Cool Products That You Can Use Now, Plant After which helped them get the word out. At craft fairs they attend, it is usually the plantable packaging that stops people in their tracks for a double take. They have also heard from many of their customers who have accumulated the packaging until they have enough and either donate it to a local school or give it to other children.
