Seed Bombs: Your Questions Answered

What are seed bombs? Find out and learn more about these Botanical PaperWorks seed bombs.

What are seed bombs?

Seed Bombs or seed balls, are small clusters packed with wildflower seeds that are designed to bring greenery and colorful pollinator habitats to urban landscapes or neglected areas.

Born from the guerrilla gardening movement that took shape in the 1970s, seed bombs were first used en masse by artist Liz Christy and the Green Guerrillas. Tired of Manhattan’s crumbling concrete sprawl, they began tossing what they called seed green-aids (sounds like grenades, get it?) into abandoned lots and run down urban landscapes.

What are seed bombs made from?

While the Green Guerillas crafted seed bombs out of balloons or even Christmas ornaments, many of today’s seed bombs are made using compost and clay wrapped around wildflower seeds – a method perfected by Japanese natural farming guru Masanobu Fukuoka. At Botanical PaperWorks, seed bombs are made with a paper pulp that is made from recycled post-industrial material. It protects the seeds and retains water for germination while also breaking down and biodegrading. Like the Green Guerillas, we believe in making the world a greener, more vibrant place so there are tons of colors and options to choose from.
